NEWFA IS DELIGHTED WITH THE RETURN TO FOOTBALL
After months without football and all the Covid restrictions it was wonderful to see Junior football return this weekend with 21 games in the Flintshire Junior League and one game in the Girls league highlighting a return to football. Much work has been undertaken behind the scenes and negotiations with leagues to ensure a safe and enjoyable return. With plans in place for a one game season, football has returned which can only be fantastic news. Well done to all involved and quite simply keep enjoying the game!! NEWFA Remembers our 1st ever Referees' Officer
It is with great sadness that NEWFA have to inform all of the passing of John D Williams. "JD"was the first Referees' Officer for NEWFA and held post from 1976 till 1985. For those who can remember, football was booming in the local area, so I'm sure we can all imagine the organisational role he managed.
John was a football league referee and FIFA official. During his time in role he introduced the Summer Seminar (which is now an Annual feature) and during his time welcomed Guest speakers such as Ken Dagnall (A World Cup Referee in 1966) and Keith Hackett who also officiated many high level fixtures, as well as becoming the General Manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board.
As with all our Referees Officers, many can thank the "RO" for undertaking the role, because opportunities are provided for all to progress; and JD Williams was no different with John Lloyd progressing onto the football league, and of course NEWFA stalwarts such as Ken Hughes, Cliff Evans and Arthur Pritchard operating on the Northern Premier League (As was the route to promotion then) learning from guidance and support that was offered.
John D Williams passed away in the early hours of this morning (10/11/20) aged 88. On behalf of North East Wales we offer our condolences to all his family and friends and take time to thank him for his services to football in our local area.
