IT'S CHIRK'S TROPHY
As in all the other youth final's played in the past fortnight it was the team with the greater physical presence that triumphed, that is not to say Chirk AAA's relied purely on their strength, as they once again showed what a quality team Roger Pearce has assembled with some superb football. But as in any team coached by Geoff Phillips - Brymbo hadn't come to lie down - and they too showed some excellent  promise in their play.
On a grey and miserable night in Llangollen it was Chirk who were out of the blocks quickest and they won a penalty after 15 minutes with Matthew Cooke upended just inside the box. Captain Paul Mitchell confidently struck the ball home for a 1-0 lead. Brymbo sufferd a huge blow after half an hour having to take off their leading scorer Damon Jones who suffered an ankle injury. Soon after Chirk's Joe Roberts lit up the night with a terrific solo goal, he picked up the ball 25 yards out, turned and struck a shot into the bottom left corner that seemed to evade four defenders on the way. Talk about threading a needle!!
In the second half Jamie Russell put the game beyond doubt with 2 clinical finishes to give his side a four goal advantage and the trophy.
A word about the Referee Mr. Ian Evans who handled the game superbly and was always on the spot to make his decisions, and kept a lid on the game when it got a bit heated.
Thanks to Llangollen Town for their great hospitality - can you order the sunshine next time though!!
The Cup was presented to the winning captain Paul Mitchell by The President of NEWFA Mr. Peris Jones.
