Ruthin Town claimed the 2010 NEWFA Tesco Cup with a pulsating performance against a gallant Mold Juniors at Brymbo Sports Complex, coming out 5-2 winners on the day, but that does not tell the complete story.
On a pitch that had taken its fair share of rain, hail and snow over the past few days, it was a credit to the Brymbo ground staff that the game went ahead on time, after an inspection by Referee Josh Wiffen.
Ruthin were soon into their stride and opened the scoring after just 2 minutes with Patrick Hinchcliffe. They remained in the ascendancy throughout most of the first half and bagged further goals from Hinchcliffe and Thomos Jones to take what looked likely to be an unassailable 3-0 lead. But nobody had told Mold Juniors the game was over, and they missed a couple of good chances just before the break. However their supporters didn't have to wait long in the second half for them to show their mettle, and a quick-fire double from the impressive Alex Calvert brought them back to 2-3 within 10 minutes of the re-start. They now looked as though they could go on and push Ruthin all the way, but Ruthin seemed to realise that they needed to step up a gear and restored their two goal lead and effectively killed off Mold's brave comeback bid just 3 minutes later with a strike from Adam Harvey-Davies. The best goal was saved until last, when a superb strike from outside the box, flew into the top right hand corner from Matthew Evans, to complete a well deserved victory in what was a very entertaining game of Football and a credit to both teams. The trophy presentations to both teams were performed by Tesco representative Claire Bennett alongside NEWFA General Secretary Ken Hughes.
RUTHIN TOWN will now go forward to represent North East Wales F.A. in the Tesco Cup Welsh National Finals,
at Cardiff University Sports Fields, Mendip Road, Llanrumney, CARDIFF. CF3 4JN on Sunday, 18th April 2010
TESCO CUP WELSH FINALS at Cardiff University on 18th April 2010
Game 1 Ruthin 1 v Gwent 1
Ruthin started well, taking the game to Gwent, and the first opening came with a ball crossed into the box, with an open goal, Ruthin could only manage to head over the bar (see pic). Gwent then hit back and a mistake on Ruthin's right hand side, let Gwent's dangerous no.19 to race down the wing before cutting in and steering the ball past the keeper. The second ten minutes saw Ruthin go to three at the back and went out to get a goal back to keep them in the competition, this duly arrived in the last minute of the game, as a cross into the box was handled by Gwent's centre half. Up stepped Patrick Hinchcliffe to calmly slot the ball into the corner of the goal. (see pic) drew 1.1
Game 2 Ruthin 0 v South Wales 1
Playing perhaps the weakest side in the group, Ruthin knew a score draw would see them into the final, however South Wales knew only a win would see them progress. This showed as South Wales threw the kitchen sink at Ruthin, who to be fair held out pretty well, without really threatening South Wales goal. The second ten minutes and Ruthin tried to get the goal they required, only to be hit with a sucker punch with 4 minutes remaining, A misplaced pass, saw SW gain possession on the left hand side of the pitch and a driven cross into the box was headed passed the Ruthin goalkeeper. Try as they might Ruthin did not have enough time left to get the goal that would of seen them into the final.
Thanks to Darren and his team for the thoroughly professional way they went about trying to win the Welsh Tesco Cup. It was a long way to go for 2 short sided games, but the boys did not complain and gave it their very best shot. Well Done Ruthin Town!!
