NEWFA win Inter-Association Trophy at Aberystwyth!!
11th April 2010
The inaugural Inter-Association Under 16's Competition was hosted by The Central Wales FA at Blaendolau Playing Fields, Aberystwyth, and was played between Representative teams from the hosts, North Wales Coast FA and our ourselves.
It was played as a Round-Robin event with each team playing the others twice in 15 minute each-way games.
Because of this format and the quality of the players on show, each game was very tight, but we are pleased and very proud to say that our boy's came out on top!!
It was an early start and we arrived in Aber at 8.45am , even though our first game was not until 10.30, so the boys all went for a paddle in the sea - good thinking Mr. Hughes!!
First up we faced CWFA and fell behind to a goal that was gift-wrapped by ourselves, but with time running out Naz Farhat beat two players and struck an absolute screamer from 20 yards out into the top corner. Next we faced NWCFA and again fell behind but rescued a point through a neat finish from Cory Smart. In our second game against CWFA the game finished 0-0, but only because of a sensational save from our captain Craig Herling. The final game of the Tournament pitched us against NWCFA and we knew that a win would guarantee the trophy coming back with us on the bus journey home.
We started the game as we had played our previous 3 games - playing some great football - however NWCFA came closest to opening the scoring when striking the bar in the second half. Cometh the hour cometh the man, and the introduction of Ryan Fisher in the second half proved decisive as he latched on to a through ball and finished decisively to put us 1-0 up. There was still time for a scare as NWCFA had a goal disallowed for offside, but our lad's hung on for a famous and extremely deserved victory.
It is hard to single players out but special mention must be given to Aled Robertson who marshalled his defence brilliantly, Ben Williams who played at centre-half for the first two games, and moved into central midfield for the next two and did not put a foot (or head) wrong all day. Cory Smart who played every minute of NEWFA's games and was still going strong at the end, and was a constant menace throughout. Last but not least Naz Farhat whose sublime skill, tough tackling, desire to win and non-stop running made him out to be the star player of the tournament, (oh and he scored that screamer too!!).
Thanks to Manager Gareth Valentine and his Assistant (and son) Gareth jnr for assembling the squad. The boys were a credit to them and behaved impeccably on and off the pitch all day.
