HORACE WYNNE CUP
Together with the Challenge Cup this is the oldest competition that NEWFA organises. The Cup was presented by Horace for competition between the "lads from the villages" and the competition kept faith with that ideal until relatively recently when it became open to all clubs, including Reserve sides, who play below the third tier.
UEFA are organising a competition for junior sides and the Council of NEWFA have agreed that the winners of this competition will represent the North East Wales area in what is being termed the Regions Cup. It is impossible to assess the pride that Horace would have that his village lads will be playing in European football.
Horace was one of the old school of sportsmen who played football in the winter and cricket in the summer. As a player he played for Cross Street in Cefnybedd where the slope on the pitch was extreme to say the least. He then turned to refereeing at the time when referees wore blazers and although kit became more modern Horace wouldn't budge from his blazer. On one occasion he went to referee Druids United when they played above where Air Products is now. There was 2 inches of snow on the ground and he told committee members to clear the lines adding "we're playing, it's a man's game".
From refereeing he went back to Cross Street as secretary and became involved in the committee of the Welsh National League and then NEWFA, eventually becoming one of the first referee assessors that NEWFA had.
On the cricket front he was a seam bowler who opened the bowling for Gwersyllt with Bob Barratt. Both played into their sixties and even at that age were terrorising batsman with their guile, variation of pace and ability to move the ball either way.
