VICTORY FOR VILLAGE!!
In the re-arranged Horace Wynne Final - as last weeks original game was postponed after a monsoon turned Tanyfron into a lake - it was last season's runners-up Garden Village who went one better and returned home with The Cup. The Brymbo groundstaff had worked hard all week to get the pitch back to its very best and the game didn't disappoint. Garden Village were first to score on 10 minutes through centre-forward James Fenlon. Village then settled down to play some excellent passing football for the next quarter of an hour. But credit to Coedpoeth United for failing to buckle and indeed finishing the half as the strongest team, and it was no surprise to the huge crowd when they equalised after 37 minutes through a headed goal from the excellent Craig Roberts! Then after 42 minutes Coedpoeth thought they had took the lead, but referee Steve Gardner had spotted a hand-ball in the build-up.
Coedpoeth started the second half in the same vain and took the lead 5 minutes in through Craig Higgins, following a rare mistake from Village player-manager and keeper Dave Williams. This shook The Villagers into their best spell and Dave Jones capitalised on a mistake in the Coedpoeth rearguard to nip in and equalise on the hour. Then following a long punt from keeper Williams, the Coedpoeth defence seemed to freeze, and man of the match Nick Skellon headed in from 12 yards for the winning goal in the 65th minute. Coedpoeth refused to give up and hit the croos bar in the 91st minute to almost force extra-time. The Cup was presented by NEWFA's Mr. Brian Roberts and Mr. Arthur Pritchard to the winning skipper David Edwards. It was rather fitting that Garden Village won the last Final of the season, as it was their Under 13's that won NEWFA's first trophy of the season back in March by lifting the Tesco Cup, at the same venue!!
